Common Pitfalls about buying External USB Hard disk Drive which cannot be harvested to use in laptop

Common Pitfalls about buying External USB Hard disk Drive which cannot be harvested to use in laptop!!

Summary:

  • We want HDD that are SATA interface
  • We want HDD that are longer than 12cm in length!
  • We want HDD that are 0.9cm in height!

Just received news from our reader:

Seagate freeagent goflex ultra portable drive 1 TB hDD has SATA interface, WARNING : height of internal HDD is 12mm, so it wont fit in laptop as regular laptop HDD is 9mm in height.

Did some investigation, found out indeed such a drive exist:

I have seen these HDD of this kind of thickness in Seagate "Expansion" Hard drive that's why I avoided them like plaque!

Even WD has a thicker HDD, their 1TB hdd is thicker than their normal 2.5" hdd.

Normal HDD (0.9cm)

Fat HDD 1.2cm  (Do not buy!!)

Length Comparison!

Normal HDD (With SATA to USB Adaptor)

Native USB HDD (Do not buy!!)

Why are we harvesting HDD from External hdd?

Simple reason:

External USB drive are cheaper + come with casing (Casing is at least $30 value!)
Bare HDD cost too much!  HDD manufacturers / sellers think that people  who buy internal drives are easily conned! But NO! We will get be conned!
