Fujifilm Finepix XP30

Fujifilm Finepix XP30 sneak peak

Here we are looking at a first look of a cheap shockproof/waterproof/dust proof camera.

It is useful for those who are living a "outdoor" lifestyle.

You can also bring it to the beach and not worry about sand jamming up the zooming mechanism.

After using it for a few days here are my comments:

You must have read a few reviews of this camera before arriving here, So I feel that I will only concentrate on the following points:

GPS:
It's a nice to have, but the GPS take a long time to get a lock. There is no screen to let you know the progress  of the satellite locking.

Once you get a lock, you will be able to see where you are located on the camera screen.
I took a few pictures with GPS on, but I have no idea how to extract the GPS information.
What is it used for? I have no idea. Even after reading the manual, I am still as clueless as before I started reading the manual.

The GPS can be operated with 2 mode. Either "Always On" or "Only When Switched On".

In Always On Mode, the GPS is always on, always tracking, so that you can get instant GPS information whenever you need it.

In Only when Switched on Mode, The GPS will only be turned on when the camera is switched on. In this mode, it will take up to 5 minutes to get a satellite lock.

When you switch on the GPS, It will drain battery life, whether it's Always on or only when Switched on.

Battery Life:

The camera has a litium ion battery, battery life seems to be ok until you switch on the GPS function.  Once GPS is activated, whether it's "Always On" or "Only when Switched on", battery life is reduced.

I think that Fujifilm should provide a bigger capacity battery for this camera.

Lens

The lens is positioned in a position that when you hold the camera in a certain way, your fingers will be blocking the lens. This is very annoying.

A lens cover is also missing. Even though this camera is supposed to be shock proof, waterproof, snow proof and dust proof. It is not finger print proof.

Finger print smear can easily get on the lens and marr the picture quality. A lens cover would be very useful in this case but alas it's not provided.

Overall, I will buy it because it's a cheap camera and has GPS but I can't use the GPS because it drains the battery fast. So get a XP20..

Buy it here:
