The New AMD Accelerated Processor Unit APU

Recently launched was the AMD Accelerated Processor,

This processor is supposed to be the future of CPU, it incoporates the GPU graphics processor and the CPU your usual CPU e.g. AMD Athlon X2 into a single die and is called a APU now.

The good thing about this is since everything is on the same die, result in faster execution of instructions, transferring of memory, registers etc in the APU.

To give you a better understanding of what's happening, here's a description in simpler terms.

The old way:
The old AMD processor e.g. Athlon X2 etc. have an integrated chip on cpu to process memory operations. it gives very fast speed on memory transfer.

So, please imagine it to be like a city, with CPU and Memory controller as neighbours. Linking them is a major 5 lane road, to talk to each other, just drive down the road in fast speed and reach in no time.

But to talk to the graphics processor, living in another town,  it needs to leave the CPU city and use the HT bus and talk to the graphics controller and send the data back. Now this HT bus is like a expressway/ freeway kind of thing but again maybe 10 lane but the data travel a longer distance but things get done.


The new way

So imagine CPU, Memory Controller and GPU now lives in the same city! so all are linked by the 5 lane major road that we are talking about. Since data do not need to travel on the freeway (HT Bus) now to reach graphics, things can be done alot quicker!
