The World's most upgradable Drive

The Seagate Freeagent Goflex is labeled as the World's most upgradable drive.. So I have to find out why is it so.

Its quite interesting as the harddisk come in 2 parts.

First is the harddisk itself, it's very small and light, size is about 14.5mm thick and has exposed SATA connectors.

Second is A Goflex USB2.0 cable is provided. This cable snaps right into the SATA port.

With this combination, you will get a USB2.0 HDD.

If you have USB 3.0 on your laptop or computer, you can buy a new Goflex connector, about $40AUD and snap it into your HDD and it instantly becomes a USB 3.0 Compatible drive.

It's quite a handy feature!

What is inside the Seagate Freeagent Goflex ?

As usual, we would like to know what drive is in the casing. After trying to figure out how to open up the casing, Seagate drives are known to be nasty to open! I finally opened it and it's a

Seagate Momentus 7200.4 Drive.

Nothing special here, but some people may be lucky and get a 7200.7 or 7200.10? can any one care to report?

As some of you requested, I have included a short summary first.

The casing is made of rigid plastic, it is extremely difficult to open. If you attempt to open it, you will almost certainly break a few clips.

The weakest link of the casing in my opinion is the side where the SATA connector is located.
This panel is not as rigid as the rest of the case.

Insert a flat head screwdriver to the side near either of the larger clips and pull the panel forward towards you to try to unseat the clips slowly.

Slowly work your way around the casing. It is inevitable that you will break one or two or even more clips. but if the hdd is what you want, then the casing does not matter at all. )

Do you get a better deal with WD or Seagate?

At this time I think if you are thinking of buying an external portable HDD to disassemble and to retrieve the drive inside, you will get a better deal with WD.

I have retrieved WD AV 2.5" which is extremely useful and WD drive is cheaper, and easier to disassemble However WD Passport first edition drive is extremely rare now.

As for Seagate, you will confirm get a SATA drive and the casing is extremely difficult to open.
It is highly likely that the casing will be damaged during the opening process and chances of reusing the casing on another HDD drive is extremely unlikely.

  1. Is the hard drive inside the case unmodified? That is, does it have a normal sata connector so I can use it in my PS3?

Also, have you had a chance to do the youtube diassembly guide?

If not any hints and tips?

    Thanks
    Ian

  4. Can you use the USB adapter with any SATA 2.5 drive? I plan to use this to upgrade my PS3, and I would like to re-use that drive with the USB adapter included with the GoFlex.
